Venezuelan Warao refugee families arrive at a newly opened UN shelter in the Tarumã-Açu neighbourhood of Manaus, northern Brazil. ; Among the 4.9 million Venezuelan refugees and migrants currently living in exile are indigenous communities like the Warao, Eñapa, Kariña, Pemon, and Ye’kwana, who have crossed borders into Brazil, Colombia and Guyana. An estimated 4,000 Warao have sought refuge in Brazil, 600 of them in Amazonas state. To improve reception conditions for indigenous Venezuelan refugees in the city of Manaus an intra-agency project has opened a new shelter in the Tarumã-Açu neighbourhood. On 14 July 2020, 158 indigenous refugees were relocated to the shelter, supported by the municipality, UNHCR, IOM, UNICEF, UNFPA and local partners Instituto Mana, ADRA, and Aldeias Infantis SOS Brasil.
